The Spartanburg County Parks Department (SCPD) carefully selects and screens every ACE staff member prior to them being hired. Each candidate must undergo a background check, Sex Offenders Registry check, drug screening, and an interview process that requires each candidate to provide personal references, and school and work history information. SCPD recruits heavily from local colleges and universities in order to hire the most educated and competent staff to work in the program. Once an individual has been hired, they must undergo an initial training period where they shadow lead counselors and are trained under direct supervision. Each staff member must also complete Safe Schools Training online. There are several Red Cross classes that staff must take in order to stay current in Red Cross First Aid and CPR certification. Throughout the year, SCPD provides several mandatory staff training sessions that include safety training, behavior modification of children, program development, and fun ideas for new games and crafts.
